Suns to Defend Title in 5th Annual Basketball Tournament 11/3/2014

Mr. Nekeno Demeritte, coach of Temple Christian Elementary School boys and girls basketball teams, is pictured motivating our female athletes during the 2013 tournament.

The Temple Christian Suns girls and boys teams are seeking to win their 4th and 5th basketball tournament championship titles respectively. The 5th annual event is being held from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Tuesday, Oct. 27 through Friday, Oct. 31 in the school’s gymnasium, and the Suns are determined to continue their four-year winning streak.

“The tournament was established because there was no league for primary schools” says coach Nekeno Demeritte. And, according to Demeritte, “there is a high level of interest on the part of students to participate in the tournament.” Gabrielle Murphy, a 5th grade basketball player at Temple Christian Elementary says that “we have a good chance [of winning]. We are playing good. We played better in the second game against Carlton Francis because we pressured more, and made more smart passes.” For coach Demeritte, he has been really impressed with Murphy’s play, given that this is her first year playing on the team. Murphy, when asked about why she joined the team, replied, “I like basketball. I’ve always wanted to be on the team.” On the boys side, 6th grader Lamar Watkins (#4) is the standout player, having won the MVP award in as many as five tournaments last year. At present, both boys and girls teams are undefeated at 2-0, and the boys are looking to repeat as champions while the girls are looking to reclaim their crown lost last year to Carlton Francis. The playoff and champions will be held this coming Friday evening.
